High versus low voltage outdoor lighting

October 7th, 2007

Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages of low voltage versus 110v outdoor lighting other than the fact that 110v outdoor lighting installation is typically more costly and difficult to install?

A: Lets start with codes. ?Low voltage is inherently safer than 120 volt lighting and easily installed plus any homeowner can do it and not kill himself or the anyone else when he touches a fixture. ?Much more labor, permits, more costly wiring, etc is usually involved when Installing a 120 V system. You have to bury the cable a foot deep for the 120V systems. These might be appropriate for lamps at the end of your driveway, but not for smaller pathway/walkway lamps.
